Start with the impression count, then the cylinder and gripper condition, the dampening and inking systems, and whether the console and electronics power up and hold their settings. Ask for service records and any rebuild history. Most importantly, see the machine running on paper before you pay anything. We let buyers do exactly that at our Sahibabad godown.

Impression count is the single best indicator, but it is not the whole story. A machine with 150 million impressions that has been properly maintained can be worth more than an untouched one of the same year that has sat idle. Look at cylinder condition, how cleanly it registers, and whether wear parts have been replaced. We give you an honest assessment before you commit.

A four colour press lays down all four process colours in one pass. A two colour press needs two passes, which means more handling, more setup time and more chance of registration drift. Two colour costs considerably less to buy and run, and still suits shorter runs and simpler work. Four colour pays off once your volume justifies it.

CP2000 is Heidelberg's press control console, fitted on later Speedmaster machines. It stores job settings, controls ink keys and registration from one screen, and cuts makeready time considerably compared with the older CPC systems. A press with CP2000 generally commands a higher price than the same model without it, and is worth the difference if you change jobs often.

The first digit is the number of printing units and the rest indicates the sheet format. So a Lithrone 426 is a four colour machine in the 20x26 inch format, and an L528 is a five colour in 28x40 inch. Once you know that, you can read most of a Komori's specification straight from its name.

Far longer than most buyers expect. Presses from the 1990s are still running commercially across India every day. What decides it is maintenance, not age: clean running, timely replacement of wear parts, and an operator who knows the machine. Spares for Heidelberg and Komori are widely available in India, which is a large part of why they stay in service so long.

Both are excellent and the honest answer depends on your work. Heidelberg holds resale value better in India and has the widest spares and service network. Komori is known for very stable registration and lower running costs, and usually costs less to buy for the same year and condition. Tell us your format, run lengths and budget and we will say which we would pick in your position.

The SM 74 is usually the sensible starting point. It handles half size commercial work at a lower running cost and takes far less floor space and power than a full size machine. Older SORMZ and SORSZ two colour presses remain a practical entry point for a growing shop. The SM 102 is the 28x40 workhorse once your volumes justify it.

For letterheads, bill books, visiting cards and small format job work, yes. A mini offset gets you into offset printing at the lowest possible entry cost. The limits are sheet size and speed, so you will outgrow it if you take on brochures or packaging. Many of our customers start there and come back for a two or four colour machine within a few years.

One four colour press, in almost every case. Two passes through a two colour machine doubles your handling, your setup time and your chance of registration problems, and ties up two operators. Two separate machines only make sense if you genuinely need to run two different jobs at once. For most commercial shops the four colour is the better investment.

Both are 28x40 inch machines. The CD 102 has a larger cylinder gap and stronger sheet transfer, so it handles heavier board and is the usual choice for carton and packaging printers. The SM 102 is the commercial workhorse for brochures, magazines and general job work on lighter stock. If you print packaging, look at the CD first.

Impression count first, then year, then the console type such as CP2000 or CPC, and whether Autoplate and a coater are fitted. Condition and service history move the figure considerably in either direction. Origin matters too, as machines imported from Europe or Japan often carry better maintenance records.
