Creative Print, a printer from Derabassi,Chandigarh spent weeks looking at five colour presses before buying a 1998 Heidelberg SM 74-5H from us. He had already inspected machines with dealers in his own region and in other cities. What decided it was not price alone — it was seeing the machine himself at our Sahibabad godown, checking that the parts on it were original rather than substituted, and having the photographs and running videos from before the machine was imported. Fifteen days after despatch the press was in his factory printing five colour work.
This is what that process actually looked like, because buying a used offset press is the kind of decision most printers make only two or three times in a working life.
He had already seen a lot of machines
By the time he reached us he had looked at several five colour presses — some near Chandigarh, some in other cities. That is the right way to buy. Anyone spending this kind of money on a used press should see more than one machine before deciding, and we would rather a buyer came to us having compared than having not looked at all.
The difficulty for any buyer at that stage is that two machines of the same model and year can be very different in condition, and the difference is not visible in a photograph on a listing.
He came and inspected the machine himself
He travelled to our godown in Sahibabad Industrial Area and went over the press in person. That is what we ask every serious buyer to do, and it is why we hold our stock on our own floor rather than working from a broker’s list of other people’s machines.
On the day he checked what an experienced printer checks: cylinder and gripper condition, the dampening and inking systems, how cleanly the machine registered, and whether the console powered up and held its settings. The press was run on paper so he could see the output rather than take our word for it.
What actually decided it
He told us four things made the difference:
- The condition of the machine itself. He had seen presses of the same model and year in worse order elsewhere.
- Original parts. Substituted or locally fabricated parts are common on used presses and they show up later as registration problems and downtime. This machine had its original components.
- Photographs and running videos from abroad. We keep the documentation from before a machine is imported — how it looked and how it ran in the plant it came from. That history is difficult to fake and most sellers cannot produce it.
- Our guarantee, and our name in the trade. We stand behind our machines through to installation, and this is a small market where a dealer’s reputation is easy to check. He checked.
Delivery and installation
We handled dismantling at our end, transport to Chandigarh, and re-installation and commissioning at his factory — the same way we do it anywhere in India. Buying the press is the straightforward part; moving several tonnes of machinery across states and having it printing again at the other end is where most of the work sits.
Printing five colour jobs within 15 days

A press that runs clean production work within a fortnight of leaving our godown is the outcome we are aiming at every time. It is also the only real measure of whether an inspection was honest.

The SM 74 is the half-size workhorse of the Heidelberg range. At 20 × 29 inch it takes far less floor space, power and running cost than a full 28 × 40 machine, while still handling commercial work properly — which is why it suits a shop stepping up to five colour without taking on a full size line.
